Q. What is Laparoscopic surgery?


A. It is a surgery done using a video camera to visualize the abdominal cavity using narrow instruments with out making long iccision.


Q. Can you do any abdominal operation laparoscopically?


A. Yes, most of the abdominal operations can be done paparoscopically.

Q. What is the success of Laparoscopic surgery?


A. Since its inception in 1989, laparoscopy is evolved as an alternative to open surgery and now replaced open surgery for cholecystectomy, appendicectomy, and obesity. Any procedure which can be done by open surgery can be done paparoscopically.


Q. How is Laparoscopic surgery done?


A. The procedure uses a laparoscope. This is a long, thin instrument with a light source at its tip, to light up inside the abdomen. Fibro-optic fibers carry images from a lens at the tip of the instrument to a video monitor which the surgeon and the staff can see. By inserting a various instruments through small incisions, surgery is performed.


Q. What are the complications of Laparoscopic surgery?


A. Main possible complications are excessive bleeding, infection and injury to internal organs. Occasionally, the surgeon many need to convert to an open surgery if he feels that it is not possible to carry out the operation properly or safely using a laparoscope. Overall rate of conversion is 3-5% which depends upon the type of operation.


Q. When can I have children after the surgery?


A. The female patients are advised to wait at least two years after surgery to avoid the stress of a pregnancy during the period of rapid weight loss and allow her weight to stabilize. Please be careful to use birth control methods in the first 18 to 24 months


Q. Will the complications due to my obesity go away after the surgery?
